7 Money-Saving Hacks for Parents

April is Credit Union Youth Month, and to celebrate, we’re sharing some of our favorite money-saving parent hacks. If you have kids, you know just how much those activity fees, food bills and trips to the mall can stress your wallet. Here’s a few of our favorite tips to help you squeeze the most out of your hard-earned cash.

Comparison Shop ‘til You Drop…or fall asleep at the computer. Resist adding items to your online cart until you’re 100% positive that you’ve have mined every last corner of the internet. RetailMeNot is an excellent resource for coupon codes.

Six Flags Ticket Discount. The Credit Union is selling Six Flags St. Louis tickets to our members at heavily discounted prices and part of the sales proceeds go to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals here in St. Louis. Simply visit your nearest branch and ask your friendly teller for details.

Seasonal Shopping. Become a grand-master of out-of-season shopping. If you hunt for softball cleats in the winter and winter coats in the summer, you’ll save hundreds on name-brand apparel by planning ahead.

Purchase Rewards dashboard. Offers will vary based on interest.

Purchase Rewards. If you’re a family on the go, Purchase Rewards in OnlineAccess is just the best. Here’s how it works: You will receive targeted offers from restaurants, stores and more. Simply activate the offer and make the qualifying purchase with your Credit Union debit card and you will receive cash back. It’s that simple. The more you use your card, the more offers you will receive, and the more cash back you can earn!

Pinterest. Pinterest is a legit life-saver. Let’s say your teenage daughter is asking for a super cool 10-foot desk with a barn wood top.  Make it yourself and save hundreds of dollars.

Text Alerts. Many stores make it easier to find great discounts by sending customers texts when deals are available. For larger families who buy multiples of shoes, clothes and school supplies, these text reminders alerts are an absolute life-saver.

Clothing Swaps. Are your kids itching for some new clothes? Consider setting up a clothing swap with their friends. All kids have unworn clothes shoved far back in the closet that are either brand new or lightly worn. Maybe that $50 t-shirt your bought is the wrong color for your child, but it could be the right color for a friend.

Groupon. Have your kids been begging you to take them rock climbing? If you’re in the St. Louis area, Climb So iLL is offering 50% off the regular fee to purchase a Day Pass or Intro to Climbing Class. Whether you’re looking for deals on Airport Parking, yoga (with free childcare!) or cooking courses, Groupon is sure to have it.
